  GB Minutes, 02/08

I. General Announcements:

  • Next meeting we will have a guest lecturer, Mark Berman, come in and talk about radio and its valuable assets to future careers both in and outside of radio. He is a former General Manager of WMUA and a current professor at UMass. Don't miss out!

  • For those of you who weren't at the last meeting, parking passes are in! If you need a pass for parking in the garage, you can obtain one from Glenn or Dana in the office. They should also be available at the next GB meeting.

  • Equipment concerns:
    • Dan will be building new control interfaces to turntables in the MCR. This week, turntable #1 will be new!
    • Production room headphones are fixed. Please be gentle when handling them!
    • The MCR CD burner has been acting up. If you receive a disc error: take the CD out, turn off the burner, and turn it on again. If problems persist, email Dan at engineer@wmua.org.

  • Reminder from your Programmer: Lots of people are filling out their logs incorrectly or incompletely! We all should do our best to fill out the log. From now on, anyone who doesn't follow this procedure will get a written warning for log infractions.

  • For those of you who may be unaware, our advisor, Glenn Siegel was a victim of the Northampton arson fires. On top of Glenn being affected, we also lost two devoted listeners of the Polka block. Our beloved Polka DJ's founded the WMUA Assistance Fund to raise money for those affected by the fires. With the help of our listeners and the community as a whole, we were able to present a check to Glenn! Thanks to all you donated. A special thanks to our polka crew for getting that ball rolling!

II. Department Director Updates:

  • Office-- The minutes are now posted on the website, for those of you who are not receiving them through email. If you go to the website (wmua.org) the minutes are linked to the meeting list on the left side of the screen.
    • Mailboxes are completed, with the exception of a few that were missed. (Sorry, Alissa!) For those of you that have new shows, you now have a mailbox. They are alphabetized by first name/DJ name. If you notice you should have a mailbox and don't, email Chelsea at office@wmua.org.
    • Any questions regarding attendance or absences from GB meetings should be sent to office@wmua.org! It is important that these requests get sent to the Office Coordinator and not the other Department Directors.

  • Music-- Reminder: If you are doing a rock-centric show, you should be playing 5 new tracks throughout your show! If you are not doing this regularly, please start!

  • Training-- Nora is begging all of you to step up to the plate and help to train the new DJ's! This is not a choice, it is an obligation you must fulfill as a DJ. It is also an excellent way to get those service hours out of the way sooner than later! If interested in helping out, please email Nora at training@wmua.org!

  • Publicity-- Sarah has created a Facebook fan page for WMUA! If you haven't become a fan already, do it right after you finish reading this email! If you already have a Facebook, you can access the site by searching "WMUA 91.1FM." You can use this to update about your show, post pictures or other interesting things pertinent to the station, and promote our excellence to those on the world wide web!
    • Not only that, but we also have a Twitter account! This can be used for the same reasons as listed above. The login information is the same as the MCR info: username = wmua, password = wmu4u53r

III. Spotlight On! with Tai Scott & Nick Russo

  • Tai Scott is our Music Librarian! His show, Traffic Jam, is on Tuesday nights/Wednesday morning from 12am-2. His show focuses on playing "jam" bands and interviewing groups that come to the area.

  • Nick Russo is our Production Director! His show, Nothing to Say and Saying It, airs Tuesday nights in the Avant Garde/Experimental block from 10pm-12. Nick's show focuses on contemporary classical and electronic composers, among many others.

IV. Open Announcements:

  • Daria shared a great story about a session that took placed in the Campus Center to discuss Haiti and the things we can do to help out. A citizen from the area who is from Haiti organized a drive for all kinds of things that would benefit those struggling in Haiti. On Daria's show, UpFront, she had this woman on air. By making the drive public on the airwaves, the drive was a romping success! This is something we should all be proud of as a station! Thank you, Daria!
